Four Countries that welcome American Retirees

Some countries roll out the welcome mat for foreign retirees, offering sometimes significant tax breaks, in-country discounts and other perks to anyone who qualifies for resident retiree status. The age you qualify as a retiree can have a broad definition, depending on where you go. For example, in Belize you can qualify for retirement residency and the associated perks as young as 45, and Panama has no stated minimum age requirement for its Gold Standard retiree residency program.

Panama Achieves Tax-Haven Status, Doesn't Want it

Colombian and Panamanian finance ministers met on Wednesday to resolve a lingering tax dispute between the two nations. On Tuesday, the Colombian government included Panama in its "gray list" after the Central American nation failed to sign a tax information exchange agreement within the allotted time period.

Mauricio Cárdenas and Dulcidio de la Guardi, the finance ministers of Colombia and Panama, respectively, announced that they are looking for a mechanism that would defuse the conflict between the two nations and remove Panama from the list of "tax havens."

President of Panama Elected – What That May Mean

On May 4th, Vice President, Juan Carlos Varela recently claimed a surprising victory over his former ally, President Ricardo Martinelli for the presidential election in Panama. This election had a seven candidate field with Varela leading with 39 percent of the votes and 32 percent for Martinelli. The outgoing President Martinelli was quick to criticize Varela and said he would push back his plans for a quick retirement and devote himself to opposing the rule of the newly elected president. It was a long campaign for both candidates, which turned ugly during the final stretch of it, but Varela came out on top.
