Some countries roll out the welcome mat for foreign retirees, offering sometimes significant tax breaks, in-country discounts and other perks to anyone who qualifies for resident retiree status. The age you qualify as a retiree can have a broad definition, depending on where you go. For example, in Belize you can qualify for retirement residency and the associated perks as young as 45, and Panama has no stated minimum age requirement for its Gold Standard retiree residency program.

Retirees eye lower cost of living in Latin America

Tarin Cardamone, 67, and her husband, James, 71, retired to Sierra Vista, Ariz., seven years ago, but now they want to move to a country in Central or South America for "a different lifestyle — something that's more exciting and adventurous than going to the local grocery store or taking a trip to Tucson," Tarin says.

They went on a retirement tour of Nicaragua last year, and they plan to take a tour of Ecuador in 2015, with the goal of moving by 2016.

What Latin America Can Offer Retirees

USA Today published an article in June called, "Retirees Eye Lower the Cost of Living in Latin America". The article focused on American retirees that were either planning to relocate or have already moved to a retirement community somewhere in Latin America and were happy with the decisions they made. Why Latin America of all places? Because many regions in Latin America have consistently beautiful weather, retirees can receive high quality, yet affordable healthcare and it's still very close to the United States.

Sorry for the depressing title to the article. But seriously, I was disappointed recently when I saw a commercial for a major US brokerage firm. There sat a stately looking, white haired gentleman who looked like he could be the poster child for AARP. He was talking about his experiences with some other brokers who discussed things like enjoying a vineyard in retirement. As the picture fades, the tag line to the commercial is, “A vineyard? Get real.”

It’s still a very serious situation for retirees. Stories and reports of the economic crisis continue ad nauseum in the traditional news media because bad news sells. “If it bleeds, it leads,” as they say. But the future is not fixed in stone. Individuals are free actors and are able to make choices that impact their lives in positive ways. Whether they do or not is an interesting study in human nature. More on that later, but for now let’s examine the current circumstances for retirees and explore options for a brighter future given the reality that currently exists.
