President of Panama Elected – What That May Mean

On May 4th, Vice President, Juan Carlos Varela recently claimed a surprising victory over his former ally, President Ricardo Martinelli for the presidential election in Panama. This election had a seven candidate field with Varela leading with 39 percent of the votes and 32 percent for Martinelli. The outgoing President Martinelli was quick to criticize Varela and said he would push back his plans for a quick retirement and devote himself to opposing the rule of the newly elected president. It was a long campaign for both candidates, which turned ugly during the final stretch of it, but Varela came out on top.
With a newly elected president, what does the future have in store for the Central American nation? For those of you who don't know, Varela is a free-market capitalist who has big plans for Panama. "Whoever wants to do business should grab their things and go to the private sector," he told his cheering crowd. Varela also plans on improving Panama's infrastructure and boosting transparency between the administration and its citizens. He was reflecting on the nation's past where it was believed that a significant amount of $15 billion that was supposed to be spent on upgrades was lost due to corruption and poor planning.
With President Varela's plans to improve the country's private sector, infrastructure, and transparency, Panama will become the one of the hot spots for international investments. Now is the time to move your assets over to Central America and to take advantage of this growing opportunity.
