Wondering about the Canal in Nicaragua?

Michael Cobb

People ask me all the time, "What is going on with the canal in Nicaragua?" Well I had the chance to meet and sit with Mr. Li recently at a luncheon and he is excited about the progress of the feasibility studies being performed by Baker McKenzie in Washington DC. I circulated the room filled with about 1000 business people and spoke to some other folks on the inside and they are also very optimistic about the canal being built.

Ecuador - My Accidental Day Crossing the Andes

Michael Cobb

Several years ago my daughter Emily and I had an accidental day at the bottom of the world when we arrived a day early in Ushia to pick up a cruise in route from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Valparaiso, Chile. We certainly made the best of it checking in the HMS Beagle Hotel named after the ship Charles Darwin made famous passing through the similarly named Beagle Channel. What a great day it was.

Obama's Latest Stance on Tax Laws Will Hurt Businesses Worldwide

Michael Cobb

In a recent speech in Los Angeles, President Barack Obama implored law makers to change tax laws relied on by many companies working overseas today. In fact, a majority of these multinational corporations are vitally structured around the current tax laws set in place. You can read more about his position in BBC's article, Obama accuses firms of "cherry picking" over tax rules

What Latin America Can Offer Retirees

Michael Cobb

USA Today published an article in June called, "Retirees Eye Lower the Cost of Living in Latin America". The article focused on American retirees that were either planning to relocate or have already moved to a retirement community somewhere in Latin America and were happy with the decisions they made. Why Latin America of all places? Because many regions in Latin America have consistently beautiful weather, retirees can receive high quality, yet affordable healthcare and it's still very close to the United States.

Ambergris Caye: A Rising Hot Spot in the Caribbean

Michael Cobb

Belize's largest island is becoming one of the main destinations for travelers, expats, and retirees in the Caribbean and Central America. In fact, it was voted "Best Island to Retire On" by Island Magazine in 2009, and held the distinction of being named "Best Island in the Americas" by Travel & Leisure Magazine. Let me introduce you to Ambergris Caye. You'll see that it has a number of unique qualities that make its community stand out from all other places in the country.

Going Native: Maybe….Maybe not

Michael Cobb

A good friend, Kathleen Peddicord published an article recently by her lead correspondent that is worth sharing. It was titled, "Why We Hate GatedCommunities...Or Do We?" It really captures some ideas that most folks don't think about when buying overseas. Many of us love the idea of living offshore and enjoying the higher quality of life for less. It's one of the major appeals to moving overseas and international living.

That said, what we sometimes forget are just how important peer relationships are. We take this for granted because in our home countries we can slip into relationships with our associates and colleagues easily. There is rarely any cultural barrier or challenge.

Why Nicaragua Should Be Your Next Destination

Michael Cobb

Over the last decade, Nicaragua has been grabbing the attention of a select group of forward thinking people from across the world. This is a country that stands out from others in the region and it's not only because of its enchanting atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, the beaches are exotic, the climate is fantastic year-round, and the culture is traditional, yet very inviting. But there is a lot more to Nicaragua that the trend-setters are starting to discover which is making this country an emerging leader in Central America.

Noah Krassenstein

I recently interviewed Mike Cobb, the Chief Executive Office of ECI Development, Ltd. a few weeks ago about what are some of the big issues facing property buyers and investors in Latin America right now. Here is a part of his thoughts.

Q. What do you mean when you say that people need to "thin-slice" Latin America to really get it right?
