Belize No. 7 Tourism Brand in Central America

According to Bloom Consulting Country Brand Ranking © 2014 Tourism Edition, this year Belize has remained on the 7th position in the region of Central America followed by its main rivals Nicaragua (8th) and Guyana (9th). Belize ranks #30 in the Americas List.

The research indicates that Belize is performing very modest in all the variables; however, the best results are related to the field of digital demand by having a rather high number of online searches in terms of tourism. Also the growth rates in international tourism receipts and arrivals show low rates because the country is not advertising itself enough online.

BTB Reports an Increase in Tourist Arrivals

The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has announced an increase in tourist arrivals for the third quarter of 2014. In a press release dated Friday, October 10th, BTB stated that both overnight and cruise ship arrivals have increased, and even exceeded, the forecasted numbers. The third quarter refers to the months of July, August and September, and is generally considered the slow season in the tourism industry, usually registering a low influx of tourist arrivals.

Tourism Sector Netted BZ$1.2 Billon or 36.6% of GDP in 2013, according to the world travel & Tourism Council

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has released a report indicating that for the year 2013, travel and tourism netted Belize BZ$1.2 billion, or 36.6% of GDP, in 2013. WTTC forecasts that travel and tourism in Belize should grow by 4.5% during 2014. Tourism accounts for 33% of all jobs in Belize.

Statistics recently released by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) indicated that tourism arrivals grew in 2013 by 5.7% for the cruise tourism sector and by 6.1% for the overnight tourism sector.

WTTC's report said that, "The total contribution of Travel & Tourism to employment, including jobs indirectly supported by the sector was 46,823 jobs (33.0% of total employment)."

Nicaragua Tourism grew 8.3 pct in 1st five months of 2014

Nicaragua welcomed 545,174 foreign visitors in the first five months of this year, which represents a growth of 8.3 percent over the same period in 2013, according to figures released by the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute, or Intur.

Between January and May 2013, Nicaragua received 503,077 foreign tourists, which means that in the same period this year there was "a substantial increase" of 8.3 percent, the executive president of Intur, Mayra Salinas, told reporters.

Tourism, Latin America one of the Largest Growth Sectors

Tourism is one of the largest growth sectors for many nations of Central America. While cruise ships only provide a small amount of money per passenger to a local economy, the sheer volume of travelers produces some very nice revenues. Belize for instance, received over $44M in passenger revenues in 2012 plus an additional $15M in port and other associated revenues.. The indirect benefits are that over 600,000 passengers departed and explored Belize for a day, many of whom had never heard of the country before or could place it on a map.

Manuel Heredia is Belize’s Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture. He lives on Ambergris Caye, where we often bump into him. In December he summarized Belize’s accomplishments of 2011. And he described some of the goals for 2012. Belize is planning an exciting year long calendar of activities in 2012, to commemorate the conclusion of a B’ak”tun, and look forward to the dawning of a new era…
