    Nicaragua – Dangerous or Simply Thought of That Way?

    Real risk and the perception of risk are two distinctly different things. And understanding the distinction can make the difference between being a day late and a dollar short – and reaping rewards that can last a lifetime. Let me explain.

    Many people drive cars, yet are deathly afraid of flying. This is irrational, because we all know that statistically, flying is between 60 and 200 times safer than driving depending on how you measure it.

    For many reasons, Nicaragua is generally not on most people’s short list as a place to visit. Believe me, I felt the same way as you may feel thirteen years ago before my first visit. But now I’ve lived here for 10 years and watched many folks become excited about the country after seeing it.

    The New World Monetary System

    Let us first have a look of the Dollar's role in the world economy, in particular with regard to its share in settling world trade and financial transactions. A currency's share in settling world trade and financial transactions reflects ongoing developments since it is directly determined by the changing relationships of economic and trade power. So that tells us more than the share of world foreign exchange reserves, because it reflects only past trends since it concerns money which has already been accumulated.

    Dear Readers,

    In 1986, the U.S. domestic oil and gas industry was on life support. Oil dropped below $10 a barrel, natural gas was cheap, and the investment community was unimpressed with the overall results of the 1973-1982 “boom” in exploration. Driven by high marginal income tax rates in the late seventies and the boundless promises of promoters, through the public markets and private placements, investors dumped billions into oil and gas companies and drilling ventures. In fact, the value of all oil and gas reserves discovered in that period was less than the total cumulative exploration and development investment!

    Belize’s Tourism Minister Reviews 2011, Previews 2012

    Manuel Heredia is Belize’s Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture. He lives on Ambergris Caye, where we often bump into him. In December he summarized Belize’s accomplishments of 2011. And he described some of the goals for 2012. Belize is planning an exciting year long calendar of activities in 2012, to commemorate the conclusion of a B’ak”tun, and look forward to the dawning of a new era…

    The Heads of Departments representing the Ministries of Belize attended this year end meeting.  Here are a few of the infrastructure and tourism 2011 accomplishments, and 2012 plans:

    Fishing for Paradise

    While playing golf is my choice for getting out for a few hours with the ‘boys’, my friends Jack and Darrell signed us all up for a fishing adventure. Now I know that fishing is good off the point near Gran Pacifica, but the local commercial fishermen power out in small ‘pangas’ (like an open john boy boat), and fish all night with lanterns. They use weighted gill nets and bring up good eating fish, or drop lines with 300 hooks and bait the drop off where the reef runs deep into the Pacific.

    Galt’s Gulch South of the Border

    Wow. Think of it. No more Big Brother in your face. No more over regulation, excessive taxation, and meddlesome bureaucrats getting in the way of your unbridled enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit. Fantastic right? Mostly, yes, but watch out. Galt’s Gulch south of the border is a wonderful idea, but reality has a way of throwing some curve balls your way. Latin America is a left-handed pitcher with a 102 Mph fastball and a wicked curve. Forewarned is forearmed.
